The cityscape of Hong Kong is defined by unique vertical fabrics and rapidly changing urban conditions. However, the mode of current urban regeneration is dominated by super block development, centralized management, and the desire to create gigantic icons. The dense, heterogeneous, and spontaneous urban fabrics representing our unique HK living culture are gradually eroded and replaced. Is there a way in urban design or architecture to capture, transform, or impregnate our unique urban texture and culture?
Hence, the design attempts to reclaim Hong Kong’s unique vertical, heterogenous fabrics that are gradually being eroded by large scale development. The project begins with a tiny lot in downtown Hong Kong which is 7m wide by 30m deep. We aim to regenerate urban vitality by designing an open, vertical building that allows future users to compose and contribute their own urban entities. By exploring the scale and arrangement of surrounding street fabrics, a vertical synthesis of heterogeneous fabrics is proposed.
The vision is to create a new type of building that can be an active participant to generate vertical street fabrics.
